After we experience a traumatic event or something intense happens to us, that physiological energy can get trapped inside of us, and can be referred to as trapped trauma energy.

Once that energy is trapped inside of us, it can contribute to different physical symptoms where our body is keeping the score. Logically or mentally it’s possible you feel different, which is why it’s important to be aware of how your body may be holding on to the trapped trauma energy.

Some of the common ways that trauma affects our bodies are the following:

·      Emotional flashbacks

·      Severe migraines or headaches

·      Disassociations

·      Feeling easily overwhelmed

·      Low energy; high level of fatigue

·      Body aches and soreness

·      Trouble with sleeping

·      Anxiety and avoidance

·      Depression

·      Weak immune system; sick often

·      Chronic pain & digestive issues

·      Unusual food cravings

(*There are other ways that trapped trauma energy could be presenting in your body and so it’s important to be in touch with yourself to recognize when things are changing or feeling different for you.)

So, what can we do if we recognize that we have trapped trauma energy?

Go to therapy! There are plenty of different therapeutic modalities and techniques that connect the mind and body in addition to allowing you to gain powerful insights into how trauma has impacted you and areas of your life.

In addition to going to therapy, it can also be helpful to move your body, quite literally. Whether it’s exercising or dancing, having a physical practice of movement in your body can also help to relieve trauma symptoms and activate your parasympathetic nervous system.
